The Joep Lange Institute is currently working on a large project with the Center for Indonesia’s Strategic Development Initiatives (CISDI) to apply the principles of Global Public Investment to the specific questions of Vaccine Equity and Disaster Risk Reduction. As part of this effort, the Director of JLI’s Global Health Diplomacy Center Christoph Benn has traveled to Jakarta on May 27, 2022 to meet with various Indonesian stakeholders, including the G20 sherpa team and representatives from the Ministry of Health, in a series of workshops facilitated by CISDI.
Indonesia has been very supportive of GPI principles and might soon become a founding donor of the future Financial Intermediary Fund (FIF) for Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response (PPPR), establishing the principle that even a LMIC can make significant financial contributions to a Global Public Good if they are assured of the benefits and their role in decision-making. This could be the main first application of GPI in practice and the example of Indonesia could become a model for other countries who have so far remained on the sidelines.
